Convert a Video to a Barcode Style Image

In 2019 on Reddit, user “plottal” created a barcode image showing how dark a recent episode of Game of Thrones was by converting the average frame color to a line on a barcode. I thought this was a really cool way to visualize the colors of a video and wanted to try this with some of my own videos. Since it appears he used Python to create his image, I took this as a challenge to create a Siri Shortcut so anyone could do replicate this on an iOS device. An thus, my first Siri Shortcut was created.

Avengers EndGame Trailer as a Barcode
This is what the first Avengers End Game trailer looks like when converted to a barcode.

How to download:

Open the link below in Safari And the open the URL in Shortcuts when prompted. You may need to enable 3rd party shortcuts under your settings before your device will allow you to install someone else’s shortcuts.

How do I use it?

  1. Download a video if you don’t have one already.
  2. Find the video in your gallery.
  3. Select Share
  4. Select Shortcuts
  5. Select “Video to Barcode – HD”
  6. Save output as an image or share with a friend.

I hope this Siri Shortcut helps someone out there in their search to create similar images. Outside of writing an application in Python, this is probably the easiest way for anyone to create a barcode from a video.
